Island isolation has influenced many artists in the past, and so it did to these five. After several weeks producing work separately, the artists got together to create a series of collaborative images inspired by their time on the island. Five independent female artists with different working styles and artistic backgrounds, they decided to explore the idea of a "feminine" or "soft" perspective, creating images that are playful and dreamlike as well as direct and imposing. Hence, the Softside Collective was born.

Today we met Ricardo, a Portuguese man who lives in a beautiful abandoned building in downtown Funchal. He brought us to his home, helping us climb the spiked gates that surround the building, and showed us around the three stories of decaying rooms, each with its own perfect view of the sprawling ocean. Photographs to come, once my film arrives from it's journey to Paris for developing!

Churchill Effect:
Outside of his famous political career, Winston Churchill was a hobbyist painter. After discovering Madeira in his later life, he spent lots of time on the island painting the natural landscape. He stayed in the same hotel, in the same room, with the same view. His behavior and paintings, one could say, represents the visitor seeking eternal beauty. Madeira uses touristic slogans like “In Madeira, time stands still” or “Eternal Spring”.

“In a certain way, the mythical outline is redrawn analogously to the one that appears in the classic mythical narratives about origins. We can even identify some echo of the mythical background of the genesic narrative of the Bible. There, Paradise gives way to purgatory or to the hell of its ex- tradition having as punishment arduous work, from which man will extract his day-to-day bread by the sweat of his brow. But, at the same time, from that purgatory, from that diligent work, rises a new creation, a new land transformed by human hand that allows it to be inhabited, humanised and possessed by man. It is a kind of copy of the myth of the lost Paradise and of its ‘structure of meaning’ that explains individual and collective existence in the scope of space-time co-ordinates of human history.Of this mythical three-dimensional view exudes the final picture of Madeira idealised in an intercourse between two extreme levels: the natural garden, wild, chiselled by divine creation or by nature, and the humanised garden, tamed nature, capable of welcoming and of being inhabited by man.”

All day, every day:

Madeira People Cam

Before the establishment of the International Date Line, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who was the first to circumnavigate the Earth, found that when he arrived back, he was one full day behind. His crew had kept careful track of each day in their journals, and it turned out that over the course of the almost-three-year voyage, they had seen one less sunrise and sunset than those on land.

“Publishing was a primary means of building a connective tissue with the rest of the world, and also of acknowledging of our own existence as artists (since we were not being acknowledged by the art world). We were not looking for legitimization from the art world and we thought of ourselves as infiltrating the museum and galleries rather than working with them. But we were very aware of our peers — Locally, nationally, and internationally — and it was tot hem that we looked for acknowledgement.”

Central to this project was the transparency of the artists' working process. Documentation of the project's development could be followed on their website from the beginning of their time on the island to the end, allowing for a public dialogue between the artists. The site, composed of images found and taken on the island, has now become a process archive for the project. You can view this archive above.

Dear Madeira, is a collaborative project that took place on the island of Madeira, Portugal in April 2013. The five involved artists, listed below, are all from different countries and different artistic disciplines. They were given the opportunity to live and work together at the Pedra Sina artist residency for the duration of this project.

Margot Holtman, visual artist/project manager (NL, 1984)
Bridget Collins, photographer (USA, 1989)
Kate Kornberg, photographer (USA, 1988)
Byrthe Lemmens, graphic designer (NL, 1989)
Karoline Swiezynski, graphic designer (D, 1982)

During weekly open studios at the Pedra Sina residency, the artists invited the local community to see their developing work and participate in their artistic dialogue. To document and make public their artistic process on the island, they created the website dearmadeira.com, an online archive that still lives and grows with the artists' continual progress.

After these four intensive weeks of producing work and collecting inspiration on the island, the artists are working on a printed publication of their experience. Exhibitions of their work will also be presented at selected project spaces in Amsterdam, New York, and Madeira, in the upcoming year.

Contact:info@dearmadeira.com

The artists would like to thank Søren Jakobsen and Márcio Ribeiro for their help.
